Re: Play Recommendation

It is my recommendation that the drama program produce the play Good People. I believe that the business and economics students at CSUCI will find that this play is applicable to their studies and that it is genuinely hilarious, thought-provoking, and interesting.

The plays Good People and Detroit share similar themes that would be relevant to business students. One theme they share is that money doesn’t buy happiness, though, I feel that Good People exhibits this theme more effectively than Detroit. In Good People we see this with Mike and Kate. Mike was able to get out of the projects, go to medical school, and become a successful doctor. Yet, he and Kate still suffer from marital problems and generally seem unhappy. This can specifically be found in Act 2 Scene 1 where they are having a discussion about counseling.

Good People would be a wonderful resource for business majors. The play discusses many issues that people have in the business world. Margie loses her job at the Dollar Store and is forced to onto the job market. The issue of unemployment is important for both business and economics majors. Another important topic that is brought up is that of networking. When Margie is forced onto the job market she realizes that it would be to her advantage to network. She forces herself into Mike’s office and gets herself invited to his party so that she can ask around for a job. Networking is a very important concept in the business world. A lot of people will tell you that it’s not about what you know but who you know.

I propose that the play be advertised in the CI View newspaper. An ad should be run for at least five consecutive weeks before the opening night. The ad should feature bright colors and attractive lettering to strike interest. The ad should have the dates of the play and approximately how long the play will last.
